Veterans Memorial Trail Expands

By: Hannah Mitchell

Due: 11/8

Recently the Veterans Memorial Trail has expanded with a newly paved section open to public use. This section travels North beginning at Hadley Valley and going through Lockport including a tunnel under Bruce Road on a 3.5-mile stretch.

In observance of this opening, a ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on October 28th featuring Forest Preserve Board President Joe VanDuyne, Lockport Mayor Steven Streit, and Illinois Tollway Executive Director Cassaundra Rouse.

Joliet Patch shares, The 7-mile bikeway links to a trail system in and around Orland Park’s Centennial Park in Cook County. From there, path users can travel east on trails into Chicago or North into DuPage County. Veterans Memorial Trail parking is available at three Hadley Valley Access areas. This trail is jointly owned and managed by the Forest Preserve District and the Village of Woodridge.

This $7.5 million project was achieved with the assistance of the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority, the City of Lockport, the Village of Homer Glen, ComEd, plus other state and federal agencies.

According to Joliet Patch, this was envisioned more than 25 years ago as planning for Veterans Memorial Tollway (Interstate 355), was taking place.

This trail is hilly, and travels through the woodlands perfect for activities such as biking, rollerblading, running, hiking - and in the winter months - cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

Cassaundra Rouse, Executive Director of the Illinois State Tollway says, “We are very happy to have played a role in supporting this accomplishment that will benefit residents for generations to come.” This new path offers users the opportunity to get out into their environment and find delight in the outdoors.

In the future Veterans, Memorial Trail plans to grow more with a plan to extend North from 159th street to an already existing section of the trail in Dupage Township.

In an interview with Patch editor, Buxbaum stated that they have “[...] about 400 games in [their] library” with family-friendly and inclusive...

Starting on December 1, users will no longer be presented with an option to list their sexual orientation, their political views, their address, or their religious views on their personal profiles. Facebook did not provide an explanation for this decision. The decision was announced one week after Meta, the parent company of Facebook, fired 11,000 employees, 13% of its total workforce; whether or not these two events are correlated, however, remains unclear.
