On Monday, October 10th, Penn Entertainment Inc. announced the relocation of its gambling casino and hotel to the Rock Run Crossings development mixed-use project near the I-80 and I-55 in Joliet. According to the Chief Executive Officer and President of Penn Entertainment, Jay Snowden, this new location offers “exceptional visibility and accessibility.” The casino has previously been situated at 777 Hollywood Boulevard along Route 6 since the early 1990s. According to Patch, a business-based news source, the project is expected to include a modern casino with approximately 800 slots, 45 live-game tables, a restaurant and a bar, as well as 10,000 square feet of meeting areas and event areas. This new project has an estimated budget of $185 million and the construction of the new property is expected to begin in late 2023.

In addition to the relocation of their Joliet casino, Penn Entertainment Inc has announced the construction of a new modern casino and hotel in Aurora. According to Patch, the new casino will be situated next to the Chicago Premium Outlets mall, near Exit 119 off I-88, which would replace the current Hollywood Casino Aurora riverboat property. According to Jay Snowden, this “ideal location will allow us to serve the millions of visitors of the adjacent Simon Premium Outlet Mall.” According to Patch, on top of having a casino and a hotel with approximately 900 slots and 50 live table games, this new location will feature a full-service spa, high-quality bars and restaurants, approximately 10,000 square feet of meeting areas and an event center. Just like the Joliet casino, the construction of the Aurora location is expected to start in late 2023. According to Jay Snowden, these two locations will not only improve the Chicagoland market but also create hundreds of new full-time jobs.

Doubled Tax Increases!?

Earlier this year, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pushed against the gas tax increase by placing a 6 month hold on the scheduled hike. His goal was to relieve Illinois families from further financial stress. As published by My State Line reporter, John Clark, “Pritzker hoped that the initiative might ease the effects of inflation on residents.” Initially postponed to January 1 of this year, a bill coming from Springfield has proposed that the hike in gas tax be pushed back an additional 6 months.  Across the country, gas prices are decreasing; but Illinois remains number two in terms of how much its residents have to pay to fill up their tanks. With California in the lead, Illinois’ prices show no real stopping point. Without taking the increases into consideration, Illinois still comes in with second place for highest gas taxing. Illinois Policy’s assistant editor, Dylan Sharkey, reported that “gas tax hikes disproportionately hurt lower-income residents, who give up a larger percent...
