On August 20th, a new Mexican restaurant opened in Joliet, IL, Tacos El Tio. This tacos restaurant comes directly from Chicago and is name Taco El Tio #6 because this restaurant is the sixth expansion since its opening in Chicago. Taco El Tio is taking the place of Beef Shack on 1660 Jefferson Street which went out of business last March. According to a student from the University of St. Francis, this newly opened business is already working well, “We went there on Saturday night to get a smoothie and it was packed.” Another student added that “the decoration makes you feel at home. It will also probably be a perfect place to go on a date.”

Other than food, clothes are also a matter for students at this start of the semester. On August 26th, the thrift shop Prison City Vintage in Crest Hill changed its open hours and is now staying open until 8 PM. This vintage clothing store, which open on September 2021, is situated at 1922 Plainfield Rd, Crest Hill, IL. From retro clothes to brand items without forgetting streetwear, this thrift shop is a place that a lot of students go to since thrift stores became more popular. One student that was interviewed at the store explained that this is now the trend, “people and mostly students want clothes that are less expensive, and vintage clothes are always a must.”

Finally, on a national level, August 30th marks the official return of Pumpkin Spice Latte season at Starbucks. The comeback of this famous drink seems to be the start of fall for everyone. When interviewed, college students stated that “ when Pumpkin Spice Latte is back at Starbucks, you know it is Fall.” Another student added that Pumpkin Spice Latte is the best part of fall, “I’ll go get one for sure the morning it is back at Starbucks.” Starbucks seems to be an important part of college students who are heavy coffee drinkers.

Doubled Tax Increases!?

Earlier this year, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pushed against the gas tax increase by placing a 6 month hold on the scheduled hike. His goal was to relieve Illinois families from further financial stress. As published by My State Line reporter, John Clark, “Pritzker hoped that the initiative might ease the effects of inflation on residents.” Initially postponed to January 1 of this year, a bill coming from Springfield has proposed that the hike in gas tax be pushed back an additional 6 months.  Across the country, gas prices are decreasing; but Illinois remains number two in terms of how much its residents have to pay to fill up their tanks. With California in the lead, Illinois’ prices show no real stopping point. Without taking the increases into consideration, Illinois still comes in with second place for highest gas taxing. Illinois Policy’s assistant editor, Dylan Sharkey, reported that “gas tax hikes disproportionately hurt lower-income residents, who give up a larger percent...
