This Saturday November 28 is Small Business Saturday 2020. During the pandemic, small businesses are struggling to stay afloat with recent restrictions and fewer operating hours. With Black Friday approaching,  many small businesses in Joliet are hoping to make some new business by participating this Saturday.

2020 marks the tenth anniversary of Small Business Saturday, which was started by American Express in 2010. Ever since the very first one, American Express and other participants urge people to support their community by shopping locally. They even have an interactive map where users can find small business in their region on their website. Users even have the option to filter by only Black-Owned businesses to help minorities and those affected by Black Lives Matter.

"This holiday season looks a little different, but we can still share joy," American Express said. "Shop small and support your favorite small businesses — both in store and online — all holiday season long."

Many small businesses were struggling to compete with conglomerates and major businesses before the pandemic. Caroline Connors, executive director of the Morgan Park Beverly Hills Business Association in Chicago, told the Joliet Patch, "Small businesses have an immeasurable effect on the quality of life in neighborhoods by providing necessary resources and supporting a local ecosystem that includes charitable organizations, schools and churches. With so many small businesses hit hard in 2020, it's more important than ever to shop locally this holiday season to ensure they are able to continue operating in 2021."

Here is a list of small, family-owned businesses you can support this Saturday to benefit the Joliet community:

This coffee shop is a little different from cafes already opened in the Joliet, Plainfield and Shorewood areas. Situated on 852 Sharp Drive in the Sharp Center off Black Road near Route 59 in Shorewood, the coffee shop, previously owned by a kickboxing studio, is close to the Bliss Hair Studio. The owners, Dana Buxbaum and her husband Shaun Tenant, mixed what they loved to create their idea of the perfect coffee shop. “I always wanted a coffee shop,” said Dana Buxbaum, “My husband and I combined our love of gaming with my vision of the coffee shop.” The coffee shop has made available bookshelves full of games such as Clue, The Serial Killer Trivia Game, Sorry, Dragoon and many more. In an interview with Patch editor, Buxbaum stated that they have “[...] about 400 games in [their] library” with family-friendly and inclusive...

Starting on December 1, users will no longer be presented with an option to list their sexual orientation, their political views, their address, or their religious views on their personal profiles. Facebook did not provide an explanation for this decision. The decision was announced one week after Meta, the parent company of Facebook, fired 11,000 employees, 13% of its total workforce; whether or not these two events are correlated, however, remains unclear.
