A Joliet resident is opening a new beauty school on N. Chicago Street where the Fitwell Fashion clothing store closed down. The school is expected to generate a good deal of traffic in the area.

Michele Birk has operated the Nail Inn and School of Cosmetology in historic downtown Lemont for 30 years. Birk signed a lease on October 1 to expand the school to Joliet, only a block away from the well-known Jitters Coffee Shop.

The Nail Inn and School of Cosmetology draws students from all across the area, such as Bolingbrook, Plainfield, and Romeoville, and a diverse group from high schoolers to middle-aged adults. She hopes for at least 100 students in the new downtown location which is expected to be open in December, Birk said in an interview with the Joliet Patch

The new location will exclusively be the Nail Inn. The cosmetology portion will not be opening right away.

According to the Nail Inn’s website, it is “Not Your Typical Beauty School.” Birk’s website reads, “The Nail Inn & School of Cosmetology believes in quality over quantity. Our classes are kept small so our instructors can spend an ample amount of time working hands-on with each student. We have a talented crew of educators, a unique learning program that encourages and rewards student achievement, and a national job placement network.” The Nail Inn students also participate in community service events in Lemont.

Downtown Joliet is the perfect place for her business to open, as it will only be six minutes from her house. Derek Conley, city of Joliet economic development specialist, was happy to see the vacant space be leased. “I also think it's a great fit for the downtown,” he said of Birk’s school, “It's going to bring a lot of people downtown and hopefully support some of the other downtown businesses.”

Situated on 852 Sharp Drive in the Sharp Center off Black Road near Route 59 in Shorewood, the coffee shop, previously owned by a kickboxing studio, is close to the Bliss Hair Studio. The owners, Dana Buxbaum and her husband Shaun Tenant, mixed what they loved to create their idea of the perfect coffee shop. “I always wanted a coffee shop,” said Dana Buxbaum, “My husband and I combined our love of gaming with my vision of the coffee shop.” The coffee shop has made available bookshelves full of games such as Clue, The Serial Killer Trivia Game, Sorry, Dragoon and many more. In an interview with Patch editor, Buxbaum stated that they have “[...] about 400 games in [their] library” with family-friendly and inclusive...

Starting on December 1, users will no longer be presented with an option to list their sexual orientation, their political views, their address, or their religious views on their personal profiles. Facebook did not provide an explanation for this decision. The decision was announced one week after Meta, the parent company of Facebook, fired 11,000 employees, 13% of its total workforce; whether or not these two events are correlated, however, remains unclear.
