Nick Palmer Named Will County Board Chief of Staff

By John Raspante

On Monday September 15, Will County Board Speaker Mimi Cowan announced that Nick Palmer, who has worked as the chief of staff to the Will County executive for sixteen years, will be promoted up to be the chief of staff to the Will County Board.

“We could not have found a better, more experienced individual than Nick Palmer to oversee county board matters and legislative issues,” Cowan praised Palmer for his many years of county government experience. “Nick has worked closely with the Will County Board for sixteen years and he will hit the ground running on day one when he assumes this post.”

Palmer is best known in the area for working under Larry Walsh Sr, the county’s longtime executive who passed away earlier this year. Palmer ran for the Democratic nomination to be the next Will County executive but was beaten in the primary by State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant. After that loss, he faced the prospect of having to find a new job, but it turns out he will remain a government employee after all.

Palmer will replace local attorney Moira Dunn, who resigned from the position over the summer. Along with managing the operations of the board, Palmer said he will prioritize working on areas like transportation, fiscal responsibility, and maintaining the quality of life for residents. In a news release, Palmer stated, “I intend to bring the historical knowledge and years of experience that I’ve gained in the executive’s office and use it to build upon the county board’s achievements. We have had great success over the years working together [and]… there is more work to be done in Will County.”

Palmer will assume the new position on November 2.

Doubled Tax Increases!?

Earlier this year, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pushed against the gas tax increase by placing a 6 month hold on the scheduled hike. His goal was to relieve Illinois families from further financial stress. As published by My State Line reporter, John Clark, “Pritzker hoped that the initiative might ease the effects of inflation on residents.” Initially postponed to January 1 of this year, a bill coming from Springfield has proposed that the hike in gas tax be pushed back an additional 6 months.  Across the country, gas prices are decreasing; but Illinois remains number two in terms of how much its residents have to pay to fill up their tanks. With California in the lead, Illinois’ prices show no real stopping point. Without taking the increases into consideration, Illinois still comes in with second place for highest gas taxing. Illinois Policy’s assistant editor, Dylan Sharkey, reported that “gas tax hikes disproportionately hurt lower-income residents, who give up a larger percent...
