On Saturday the 26th at 6am Glenwood Ave in Joliet was packed with cars all waiting to get into the Marathon Gas station for a gas giveaway hosted by New Covenant Worship Center, a church only a few blocks down the road from Marathon.

162 people waited in the long line for $20 worth of free gas handed out by the church as a community outreach event. With the help of volunteers from the church the gas was pumped into cars and gone in a little over 90 minutes. One of the volunteers said “That $20 might mean the difference for someone getting back and forth to work. It’s really a blessing, especially during these difficult times.”

Motorists weren’t the only ones who benefited from the gas giveaway. The owner of the Marathon Gas station made $3,000 in sales in a very short time.  The workers of the station did their best to keep the lines going smooth and orderly while the owner was at the register ringing up all the gas sales.

The motorists benefitting from the gas giveaway did not mind waiting in the long line. Carlotta Shoemaker of Joliet heard of the event from her sister and said, “It’s something that’s helping me out a lot, especially since I have kids to take care of.”

New Covenant Worship has had three gas giveaways, which were held at a former CITGO on the eastside of Joliet. Pastor Jonas Jones is happy to host the event and that his church is in a position to hold these types of giveaways. Originally the gas giveaway was going to be paired with a Back to School coat drive, but because of Covid the church canceled the coat drive. On August 1st the New Covenant Worship Center gave away $1,200 in laundry services at the Blue Kangaroo Laundromat on Cass St. in Joliet.

This coffee shop is a little different from cafes already opened in the Joliet, Plainfield and Shorewood areas. Situated on 852 Sharp Drive in the Sharp Center off Black Road near Route 59 in Shorewood, the coffee shop, previously owned by a kickboxing studio, is close to the Bliss Hair Studio. The owners, Dana Buxbaum and her husband Shaun Tenant, mixed what they loved to create their idea of the perfect coffee shop. “I always wanted a coffee shop,” said Dana Buxbaum, “My husband and I combined our love of gaming with my vision of the coffee shop.” The coffee shop has made available bookshelves full of games such as Clue, The Serial Killer Trivia Game, Sorry, Dragoon and many more. In an interview with Patch editor, Buxbaum stated that they have “[...] about 400 games in [their] library” with family-friendly and inclusive...

Starting on December 1, users will no longer be presented with an option to list their sexual orientation, their political views, their address, or their religious views on their personal profiles. Facebook did not provide an explanation for this decision. The decision was announced one week after Meta, the parent company of Facebook, fired 11,000 employees, 13% of its total workforce; whether or not these two events are correlated, however, remains unclear.
