Joliet’s Harrah’s Casino coming back into play after COVID regulations

 By: Paula Garcia

The past July 1st , The Harrah’s casino reopened to the general public in accordance with the Illinois governor J.B. Pritzker and the Illinois Gaming Board regulations. Due to Covid-19 the hours of operation, food services and room capacity have changed in order to keep clients and personnel safe.

In the past month, according to SBC Americas, “the Hollywood Casino Joliet and Harrah’s Casino Joliet will be restricted to within the hours of 8am to 11pm daily, and casino occupancy will be reduced during the mitigation period from 50% of fire code capacity to 25% of fire code capacity.” They also mentioned that the food and beverage services are suspended inside the casino but outside service and takeout are permitted. Not surprisingly, everybody is required to use facial masks, keep social distancing (6 ft) and other sanitizing requirements.

The Illinois Gaming Board (IGB) has announced this week that “Beginning at 5:00 PM on September 18, 2020, all licensed gambling operations at the Hollywood Casino Joliet and Harrah's Casino Joliet will revert back to the Restore Illinois Phase 4 mitigation efforts. This means that Food and beverage service is no longer suspended inside casinos. Additionally, the capacity limit is increased from 25% to 50% of the fire code capacity per the Phase 4 Restore Illinois guidelines. Masks must be worn at all times inside the casino. Congregating around table games, carnival games and EGDs is prohibited. Existing social distancing, sanitizing and other mitigation protocols and measures in approved Casino Pandemic Resumption Plans remain in effect.”

This might give a breath of hope to all these businesses which depend on gathering large amount of clients, providing close services that at this time can be a risk but it might be productive and pleasing if the regulations of the Phase 4 are well followed and reinforced.

Doubled Tax Increases!?

Earlier this year, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pushed against the gas tax increase by placing a 6 month hold on the scheduled hike. His goal was to relieve Illinois families from further financial stress. As published by My State Line reporter, John Clark, “Pritzker hoped that the initiative might ease the effects of inflation on residents.” Initially postponed to January 1 of this year, a bill coming from Springfield has proposed that the hike in gas tax be pushed back an additional 6 months.  Across the country, gas prices are decreasing; but Illinois remains number two in terms of how much its residents have to pay to fill up their tanks. With California in the lead, Illinois’ prices show no real stopping point. Without taking the increases into consideration, Illinois still comes in with second place for highest gas taxing. Illinois Policy’s assistant editor, Dylan Sharkey, reported that “gas tax hikes disproportionately hurt lower-income residents, who give up a larger percent...
