Dan’s Homemade Candies at 1003 Plainfield Road officially launched its Fall 2020 campaign on Wednesday. It was the store’s first day of the fall season selling their classic candy apples, and lines were out the door for the tasty treat.

According to long-time store manager Karen Nolan, the fall season is always a very busy time for the business. Last fall, over 66,000 hand-dipped candy apples were sold. “Let me tell you, it’s a lot of work!” Nolan told the Joliet Patch.

Dan’s Homemade Candies had a late start this season as they usually get their first bushel of apples in late August. But the business had to change the Michigan apple orchard they get their apples from each year which caused a delay in delivery.

But the constant lines of customers waiting outside in the gloomy weather is only the beginning for them. As Halloween approaches, Dan’s Homemade Candies is to introduce a bigger variety of candy apples to their roster, including more Halloween themed ones such as apples that are designed to look like ghosts and pumpkins. As of now, the store will continue to sell their usual September variety; caramel apples, caramel apples covered with chocolate, caramel apples with peanuts, caramel apples with chocolate and pecans. They also sell jumbo apples.

Dan’s Homemade Candies is a family owned business and also has locations at 229 East Cass St. and a third location in Mokena that are also very successful during this time of year. The 1003 Plainfield Road location is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.. Those who are interested are encouraged to place orders over the phone due to such high demand for the products.

Doubled Tax Increases!?

Earlier this year, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pushed against the gas tax increase by placing a 6 month hold on the scheduled hike. His goal was to relieve Illinois families from further financial stress. As published by My State Line reporter, John Clark, “Pritzker hoped that the initiative might ease the effects of inflation on residents.” Initially postponed to January 1 of this year, a bill coming from Springfield has proposed that the hike in gas tax be pushed back an additional 6 months.  Across the country, gas prices are decreasing; but Illinois remains number two in terms of how much its residents have to pay to fill up their tanks. With California in the lead, Illinois’ prices show no real stopping point. Without taking the increases into consideration, Illinois still comes in with second place for highest gas taxing. Illinois Policy’s assistant editor, Dylan Sharkey, reported that “gas tax hikes disproportionately hurt lower-income residents, who give up a larger percent...
