Construction on Inwood Softball Complex is Officially Underway

 By John Raspante

The Joliet Park District is working in full swing on a new $1.4 million addition to the six softball diamonds at the Inwood Sports Complex. Hoppy’s construction in Lockport is tearing up the grass infields in order to make way for new artificial FieldTurf.
“This has been a project on our list for ten years or so,” Joliet Park District Director Brad Staab said in an interview on Thursday. He also says he is hoping for all the work to be completed before the snow arrives this winter. The outfields for each softball diamond will remain grass, and once the renovations are complete, the park district plans to resume its softball leagues in March.
Softball is a big draw for the Joliet Park District, with there being more than 200 softball teams in its leagues annually. Once the FieldTurf is ready, the park district will also be able to host youth baseball, high school baseball, and girls’ softball tournaments at the sports complex.
Staab also believes it’s important for Joliet residents to know that the Joliet Park District will not have to raise property taxes for the $1.4 million installation. “No increases in taxes… The Joliet Park District has some leftover funds from our 2014 referendum, and we had a big financial turnaround at the end of 2019.”
FieldTurf is the same turf vendor that Joliet used for its 2018 improvements to the downtown stadium used by the Joliet Slammers. “A lot of athletic facilities are going toward turf,” said Staab. “Maintenance costs go down and it helps you absorb the weather easier.”
This project marks the biggest capital improvement at the Joliet Park District since the $7.7 million Nowell Park Rec Center opened on Mills Road two years ago.

Doubled Tax Increases!?

Earlier this year, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker pushed against the gas tax increase by placing a 6 month hold on the scheduled hike. His goal was to relieve Illinois families from further financial stress. As published by My State Line reporter, John Clark, “Pritzker hoped that the initiative might ease the effects of inflation on residents.” Initially postponed to January 1 of this year, a bill coming from Springfield has proposed that the hike in gas tax be pushed back an additional 6 months.  Across the country, gas prices are decreasing; but Illinois remains number two in terms of how much its residents have to pay to fill up their tanks. With California in the lead, Illinois’ prices show no real stopping point. Without taking the increases into consideration, Illinois still comes in with second place for highest gas taxing. Illinois Policy’s assistant editor, Dylan Sharkey, reported that “gas tax hikes disproportionately hurt lower-income residents, who give up a larger percent...
